How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Puree (Easy Oven-Roasted Recipe)

Making your own pumpkin puree is one of those simple kitchen skills that feels especially rewarding in the fall. With just one pumpkin and a little time in the oven, you can make fresh, homemade pumpkin puree to use in all your favorite fall recipes.

It’s incredibly easy, requires no special ingredients, and is a wonderful way to make the most of pumpkin season.

Whether you’re making pumpkin bread, muffins, pancakes, or homemade pumpkin pie, this easy pumpkin puree recipe is a great alternative to canned pumpkin.

Why Make Your Own Pumpkin Puree?

I love finding simple ways to make more of our food from scratch, especially when it requires so little effort.

Homemade pumpkin puree is:

  • Made with one ingredient: Just fresh pumpkin!
  • Naturally nutritious: Pumpkin contains beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A, along with fiber and potassium.
  • Budget-friendly: Especially when pumpkins are in season.
  • Perfect for baking: Use it in pumpkin bread, muffins, pancakes, pies, and more.
  • Easy to freeze: Make a big batch and save it for later.

Ingredients

  • 1 small sugar pumpkin (or an heirloom pumpkin like I used for my reel), approximately 2–4 pounds

How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Puree

1. Preheat your oven.

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Prepare the pumpkin.

Wash and dry your pumpkin. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut it in half from top to bottom. Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp with a spoon.

You can save the seeds for roasting if you’d like!

3. Roast the pumpkin.

Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on your prepared baking sheet.

Roast for 35–50 minutes, depending on the size of your pumpkin, or until the flesh is very soft and easily pierced with a fork.

4. Let it cool.

Remove the pumpkin from the oven and allow it to cool until it’s comfortable to handle.

5. Blend until smooth.

Scoop the softened pumpkin flesh away from the skin and place it into a food processor or blender.

Blend until completely smooth and creamy. You can also use an immersion blender.

If your pumpkin is especially watery, strain the puree through a cheesecloth-lined strainer before using it in baking.

6. Store or use immediately.

Your homemade pumpkin puree is ready to use in your favorite recipes!

How to Store Homemade Pumpkin Puree

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.

Freezer: Freeze in airtight, freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 3 months for best quality.

I love freezing pumpkin puree in 1-cup portions so it’s ready whenever I want to make pumpkin bread or muffins.

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.

Tips for the Best Homemade Pumpkin Puree

Choose the right pumpkin. Small sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins typically have sweeter, smoother flesh than large carving pumpkins.

Don’t add water when blending. Roasted pumpkin usually contains enough moisture to blend on its own. Adding water can make the puree too thin for baking.

Strain if needed. Homemade pumpkin puree can have more moisture than canned pumpkin. If you’re using it in a baking recipe, draining excess liquid will help produce more consistent results.

Freeze extra puree. This is one of my favorite ways to make fall baking easier throughout the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use homemade pumpkin puree instead of canned pumpkin?

Yes! You can generally substitute homemade pumpkin puree for canned pumpkin in a 1:1 ratio. For best results, make sure your puree has a similar thick consistency to canned pumpkin.

Do I need to peel the pumpkin before roasting?

No! Roasting the pumpkin with the skin on makes preparation much easier. Once cooked, the flesh scoops right out.

What kind of pumpkin is best for puree?

Sugar pumpkins, also called pie pumpkins, are ideal because they have a naturally sweet flavor and smooth texture. But you can roast any pumpkin you like.

Can I use a large carving pumpkin?

You can, but carving pumpkins tend to have more watery, stringy flesh and a less concentrated flavor. Smaller pie pumpkins are usually better for baking.
